The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is said to have sanctioned the prosecution of IPS officer AB Venkateswara Rao (IPS:1989:AP) for his alleged irregularities in the procurement of surveillance equipment during his tenure as Additional Director General of Police, Intelligence Department, in Andhra Pradesh.
According to the order, the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) which conducted a thorough investigation into the case following the request of the MHA, advised initiating prosecution before a competent court of law against AB Venkateswara Rao. The MHA is also of the opinion that the former Intelligence chief has committed offences punishable under the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act.
A.B. Venkateswara Rao was placed under suspension, and Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials registered an FIR in 2021 under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly bypassing procurement rules to purchase equipment worth ₹25.50 crores through a company linked to his son. This was purportedly done under the police modernisation scheme with the intent of causing financial loss to the government and wrongful gain to his son’s company.
