The newly-formed Congress-led UDF government in Kerala under Chief Minister V D Satheesan has begun actions to free government organs from the control of the erstwhile Left govt’s appointees. After effecting a bureaucratic rejig, the new govt has now turned attention towards changing heads of various corporations and boards appointed during the previous LDF govt.
The Department of Planning and Economic Affairs has issued an order directing the officials to remove the chairman/vice-chairman/members of various boards and corporations in a legal manner and initiate a new recruitment process.
It has been clarified to the department heads that the senior most officer shall hold charge of the Secretary/CEO posts remaining vacant in boards and corporations.
The Congress leadership has been reportedly receiving demands from various quarters to speed up appointments in boards under different departments of the government.
This order was issued after a cabinet meeting on June 4. During the formation of his cabinet, CM Satheesan had admitted that some of the deserving MLAs missed out the opportunities to be included in the ministry.
It is believed that the Congress may arrive at an understanding with the allies, and some of the MLAs who couldn’t make it to the ministry could be accommodated in boards and corporations.
The UDF govt has already effected a major administrative reshuffle, transferring around 50 IAS officers on Tuesday, besides reinstating suspended senior bureaucrats N Prashanth (IAS:2007:KL) and B Ashok (IAS:1998:KL). Not only this, the duo were given plum posts in the latest rejig.
While Prashanth has been posted as Special Secretary of the Sports Department with full additional charge of Youth Affairs, Zoos, Museums, Archaeology, and Archives departments, Ashok has been posted as Principal Secretary in the Higher Education Department.
