Telangana’s top police echelons are abuzz about who will succeed M Mahender Reddy (IPS:1986:TG) as Director General of Police (DGP)? Reddy is set to retire on 31 December 2022. In the race for the top police position, Anjani Kumar, Ravi Gupta, and CV Anand are among the front-runners.
Reliable sources said, that the government is most likely to send the names of five senior IPS officials to the Union Public Service Commission for the new state police chief.
They are;
Omesh Sharaf (IPS:1989:TG)
Anjani Kumar (IPS:1990:TG)
Ravi Gupta (IPS:1990:TG)
CV Anand (IPS:1991:TG)
Rajiv Ratan (IPS:1991:TG)
Omesh Sharaf who is the current Director General of the Special Protection Group (SPG) is retiring from the services in July next year, so his name is not likely to be considered by UPSC. After Umesh Sharaf, two 1990 batch officers — ACB Director General Anjani Kumar and Principal Secretary of Home Department Ravi Gupta are in line. Hyderabad City Police Commissioner CV Anand (IPS: 1991:TG) and Rajiv Ratan (IPS:1991:TG) are in Additional Director General (ADG) rank. Both these officers are likely to get DG rank promotion in December itself.
Taking all these into consideration, the State government is likely to send the names of Umesh Sharaf, Ravi Gupta, Anjani Kumar, Rajiv Rathan, and CV Anand to the UPSC soon. The race is likely to be between Anjani Kumar and CV Anand, who are said to be on good terms with the powers that be. Ravi Gupta, however, cannot be ruled out.
The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Nagaland government, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the UPSC to finalise the process of appointment of the state Director General of Police on or before December 19. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha refused to grant 60 days time as sought by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for finalising the process relating to the appointment of the Nagaland police chief.
The bench said failure to comply with its directions may lead to use of “coercive arms of law” by it.
In July, 2018, the top court had passed a slew of directions on police reforms in the country and restrained all States and UTs from appointing any police officer as acting DGPs to avoid favouritism and nepotism in such high-level appointments.
As per the process, the UPSC, in consultation with state government and other stakeholders, has to prepare a list of three senior police officers and out of them, the state can appoint any one as the DGP.
Presently, 1991 batch IPS officer T J Longkumer is continuing as the Nagaland DGP.
Longkumer was appointed as the DGP on June 27, 2018. He was given a one-year extension last year till August 31, 2022. This year he was again given an extension of six months till February next year
The top court has been hearing a plea seeking enforcement of the apex court’s earlier directions on appointment of the DGP. (PTI)
It is said that fame comes at a cost. This is indeed true for Bihar IPS officer Amit Lodha (IPS:1998:BH) as great trouble has started for him. His fame has grown as a result of the web series, “Khakee: The Bihar Chapter”, but now things are looking up for him since Lodha is suspended by the Bihar government after a case was filed against him for corruption and for allegedly entering into a commercial agreement with Netflix as a government employee.
According to an official statement, Lodha is accused of using his position for financial gains by signing an agreement with the streaming platform. A deal was made with the production house Friday Storytellers while he was an IPS officer.
A statement said the department found that the allegations of corruption against Lodha were true during the investigation. Consequently, the Special Vigilance Unit filed a case on December 7 based on sections 120B and 168 of the IPC, along with sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
A Deputy Superintendent of Police rank officer has been assigned to investigate the case against Mr. Lodha, who recently was transferred from Gaya to the police headquarters. In Gaya, he was posted as the Inspector-General of Police (Magadh range).
‘Khakee: The Bihar Chapter’ follows the epic battle between two men on opposite sides of the law – a dreaded gang lord and a staunchly upright IPS officer.
