Why Revanth Reddy Picked Sanjay Jaju as Telangana Chief Secretary

Sanjay Jaju's appointment as Telangana Chief Secretary surprised many. Here's why Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is believed to have preferred him over other senior contenders.

The appointment of senior IAS officer Sanjay Jaju (IAS:1992:TG) as the new Chief Secretary of Telangana came as a surprise to many in bureaucratic circles, with speculation largely centred around 1992-batch IAS officers Jayesh Ranjan and Vikas Raj. However, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy appeared clear about his choice from the outset. Sources indicate that during his recent two-day visit to New Delhi, one of his key priorities was to ensure the expeditious clearance of Jaju’s repatriation and appointment to facilitate a smooth transition at the state’s top bureaucratic post.

While the government has not officially disclosed the reasons behind Jaju’s selection, several administrative and political factors are believed to have worked in his favour.

Longer Tenure Ensures Administrative Continuity

One of the biggest advantages with Jaju is his remaining service tenure. Scheduled to retire only in February 2029, he can continue as Chief Secretary through the Telangana Assembly elections expected in late 2028. In contrast, other senior contenders, including Jayesh Ranjan and Vikas Raj, are due to retire earlier. According to sources, the government preferred a Chief Secretary who could provide continuity during one of the most politically significant phases of its tenure, avoiding a change of leadership close to the Assembly elections.

No Administrative Baggage of the Previous Regime

Jaju has been on Central deputation since 2014, serving in New Delhi throughout the decade when Telangana was governed by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). As a result, he remained outside the state’s administrative set-up during the previous regime. Sources say this made him an attractive choice for the Congress government, as he comes without any administrative association or baggage linked to the former dispensation.

Rich Experience at the Centre

Another factor believed to have strengthened Jaju’s candidature is his extensive experience in the Central Government. Over the past several years, he has served as Secretary, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, and Additional Secretary in the Department of Defence Production. His familiarity with Central ministries, policymaking and administrative processes is expected to help Telangana secure faster approvals and strengthen coordination with the Union Government for key developmental projects.

Strong Digital Governance Credentials

Jaju is also widely regarded as a technology-driven administrator. During his career, he played a key role in developing the Mee Seva citizen services platform in the undivided Andhra Pradesh and was instrumental in introducing digital systems for National Highways. Sources believe these credentials align with the Telangana government’s emphasis on attracting investments, expanding infrastructure and accelerating digital governance. Significantly, soon after assuming office as Chief Secretary, Jaju was also entrusted with the additional charge of the Industries & Commerce and Information Technology (ITE&C) departments, reflecting the government’s confidence in his administrative and technological expertise.
