As Manipur Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel (IAS:1991:AGMUT) is going to retire on August 31, there is a likelihood that he is considered for the post of Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) Chairman.

This crucial position under the Delhi government has been lying vacant since the departure of retired Allahabad High Court Judge Justice Umesh Kumar last year.

A section of Delhi govt insiders indicates that the state govt may opt for Goel for the coveted position.

Sources point out that Puneet Kumar Goel, being an IIT graduate in electrical engineering, possesses rare domain expertise for the power sector. Besides, he is believed to be having the backing of former Union Power Secretary and current Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla.

In this way, Goel is considered a strong contender for the coveted post. However, another section of administrative observers views his path to the DERC chairmanship as challenging.

In the meanwhile, a three-member panel under retired Delhi High Court Judge SL Bhayana has been constituted by Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu to shortlist candidates for the chief regulatory role.
