Tamil Nadu to seek 3-month extension for Chief Secretary M Sai Kumar

Tamil Nadu government to seek Centre’s approval for three-month extension of Chief Secretary M Sai Kumar.

The Tamil Nadu government on Friday (June 19, 2026) decided to seek the Centre’s approval for extension of service of Chief Secretary M Sai Kumar (IAS:1990:TN), who is scheduled to retire on August 31, 2026.

The state government has sought a three-month extension for the senior IAS officer.

Notably, M Sai Kumar was appointed as Chief Secretary on April 8, 2026 by the Election Commission during the period of enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, replacing incumbent N Muruganandan (IAS:1991:TN).

During his career, Dr Sai Kumar has held several important assignments in the Tamil Nadu government. He served as Collector of Dharmapuri and Virudhunagar, Public Works Secretary, Chairman and Managing Director of the erstwhile Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), and Principal Secretary-I to then Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami during 2018–21.
