In a significant diplomatic move, the Government of India on Monday (April 27, 2026) appointed former Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi as India’s next High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
New Delhi’s decision to send a senior political figure to Dhaka comes at a time when both sides are looking to repair bilateral ties that had come under strain during the tenure of the interim government in Bangladesh led by Muhammad Yunus.
Mr. Trivedi is expected to take up the assignment shortly, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a brief statement.
He will succeed Pranay Kumar Verma (IFS:1994), who has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.
Unlike conventional diplomatic appointments, Mr. Trivedi’s posting stands out as he is a political appointee rather than a career diplomat, making it a notable strategic assignment.
A seasoned politician, Trivedi served as Union Railway Minister between 2011 and 2012 and was Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare from 2009 to 2011 in the government led by Manmohan Singh.
He was a Member of Parliament from 2009 to 2019, representing Barrackpore in West Bengal. Initially associated with the All India Trinamool Congress, he later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2021. Mr. Trivedi also has a background in business aviation and holds an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin.
