MHA extends WB DGP Siddh Nath Gupta’s tenure by 6 months amid polls

MHA extends West Bengal DGP Siddh Nath Gupta’s tenure by 6 months amid elections, raising questions over post-poll leadership.

In an unusual move, the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday (April 27, 2026) extended the tenure of incumbent West Bengal DGP Siddh Nath Gupta (IPS:1992:WB) by six months. He was scheduled to retire from service on April 30, 2026.

Gupta was appointed as Director General of Police by the Election Commission of India hours after the announcement of Assembly election dates on March 14, 2026. On March 15, 2026, the Commission removed interim DGP Peeyush Pandey and appointed Siddh Nath Gupta in his place, directing that Mr. Pandey should not be assigned any election-related duties.

The extension comes at a time when the Model Code of Conduct remains in force, with the second phase of polling scheduled for April 29, 2026, and vote counting on May 4. The decision is being seen as an attempt to ensure continuity in police leadership during the sensitive election period.

However, the move has raised questions as, in such situations, once the election process concludes, the charge is typically handed back to the previous DGP. In the present case, it would have meant a return of charge to Mr. Pandey.

With the six-month extension going beyond the election period, the decision has triggered speculation over the post-poll administrative arrangement. Observers note that the continuation of Mr. Gupta may come under review depending on the election outcome and the stance of the government that assumes office.

West Bengal has a history of election-related violence, both before and after polling. In this context, continuity in leadership is also being viewed as a factor behind the decision, particularly to manage law and order during and after the electoral process.

The situation is likely to become clearer after the completion of the election process and declaration of results.
