The Delhi government’s latest directive to senior bureaucrats brings to the fore a chink in its armour, exposing an uneasy equation between the political bosses and the bureaucracy.
In its latest directive, the Delhi govt has asked its senior bureaucrats to mend their ways and ensure that meetings convened by the Chief Minister take top priority, and decisions and directions coming from the Lieutenant Governor and the Centre must be promptly shared with the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).
The move is a telling commentary on growing concern within the government over the flow of information and the perceived reluctance of some officials to keep the political bosses fully informed.
Sources say that the Chief Secretary has been issuing warning letters to officers repeatedly absent from CM’s meetings.
Whether this is a matter of a routine administrative indiscipline or a deeper institutional disconnect remains to be unearthed. But, there is no denying that the tightening of protocols points to an administrative need to enforce accountability. Further, it is of paramount concern for the elected leadership to get the necessary information it needs to govern Delhi effectively.
