New Delhi: The Centre has extended the tenure of West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) Siddh Nath Gupta (IPS:1992:WB) by another six months, putting to rest speculation over a change at the top of the state police.

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to extend Gupta’s service for six months beyond October 31, 2026.

With the latest extension, Gupta will continue as West Bengal DGP until April 30, 2027.

Gupta was appointed DGP of West Bengal on March 15, 2026, after the Election Commission of India replaced incumbent DGP Peeyush Pandey following the announcement of the state Assembly elections. Gupta was due to retire on April 30, 2026, but his service was subsequently extended to enable him to continue as DGP.

The latest decision means Gupta will continue in the post beyond his earlier extended tenure, and the speculation over the appointment of his successor has effectively been put to rest for the time being.
