A final decision on Bihar’s next DGP is expected soon, as Bihar Government had sent a list of 09 senior Bihar cadre IPS Officers to the UPSC and the announcement on new Bihar DGP can come any time soon. Out of the 09 shortlisted names, the UPSC will select three names and send it to Bihar Government. A.K.Singhal is the interim DGP, on account of situation arising out of Gupteshwar Pandey’s VRS.

The names of these senior DG rank IPS officers are as follows:

  1. Rajesh Ranjan (IPS:1984:BH) (Central Deputation)
  2. Kumar Rajesh Chandra (IPS:1985:BH) (Central Deputation)
  3. Sheel Vardhan Singh (IPS:1986:BH) (Central Deputation)
  4. A.S.Rajan (IPS:1987:BH) (Central Deputation)
  5. Manmohan Singh (IPS:1989:BH) (Central Deputation)
  6. Dinesh Singh Bisht (IPS:1987:BH)
  7. Arvind Pandey (IPS:1988:BH)
  8. S.K.Singhal (IPS:1988:BH)
  9. Alok Raj (IPS:1989:BH)

1984 batch IPS Officer of DG Rank, Rajesh Ranjan is senior most and is due for retirement on 30th November this year. An IPS Officer should be a minimum of 6 months of service remaining before he or she could be considered for the post of DGP. Barring one, all other officers have more than 6 months of service remaining, and are of DG rank, qualifying them for the post.

The appointment of DGP, which earlier used to be an unilateral decision of the state CMs, can’t be decided unilaterally any longer. Now the state government is bound to select a name out of the list of 3 names given by UPSC.
