Piqued over a sudden transfer amid a major hooch tragedy investigation, young Madhya Pradesh cadre IPS officer Anurag Sujania (IPS:2014:MP) has resigned from the job 5 days after being removed as Sagar SP.
The young IPS officer submitted his resignation to the state government on November 2, citing ‘personal reasons’ as cause for resignation.
Just five days ago, the state govt had transferred him from Sagar to the Police Headquarters (PHQ) in Bhopal as Assistant Inspector General (AIG) on October 27.
His transfer was part of a reshuffle involving the collectors and SPs of Sagar and Dewas districts.
Insiders point out that the timing of the transfer had caused considerable discontent leading to his decision to resign, although Sujania cited personal reasons for it.
Actually, Sujania was overseeing the investigation into the Sagar hooch tragedy when the transfer order was issued. He was replaced by Sanjeev Kumar Sinha (IPS:2020:MP).
The Banda hooch tragedy in Sagar district had claimed at least 16 deaths following the consumption of illegally manufactured poisonous liquor.
Unofficial estimates put the death toll considerably higher, at around 36.
The tragedy exposed an alleged network involved in the manufacture and distribution of illicit liquor and raised questions about law enforcement and administrative oversight.
Following this hooch tragedy, the state govt removed both the Sagar District Collector and the SP.
During his decade-old career, he has been SP of several districts, including Tikamgarh, Mandsaur, Morena and Sagar.
Sujania, a postgraduate in engineering, hails from Rajasthan.
