Agartala: Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar (IPS:1994:TR) was found dead at his office at the State Police Headquarters in Agartala on Monday (July 20, 2026).
The cause of death was not immediately known. The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation, and further details are awaited.
Following the incident, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, and other senior government officials visited the hospital.
Dhankar took over as the Director General of Police, Tripura, in May 2025 after serving as DGP (Intelligence). A highly decorated officer with over three decades of service, he was a 1994-batch Tripura cadre IPS officer.
During his career in Tripura, Dhankar served in several key positions, including SDPO, Longtharai Valley; Superintendent of Police of the undivided West Tripura and South Tripura districts; Superintendent of Police (Special Branch); AIG (Headquarters); IGP (Law & Order); DGP (Intelligence); and finally Director General of Police.
He also had an extensive tenure on central deputation, serving as SP, DIG, Joint Director and Additional Director in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He also held the posts of IG (Research and Correctional Administration) in the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) and IG (Personnel) in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
Dhankar also served with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo during 2003-04 and headed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs to probe the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
He was a recipient of the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
