A day after the Supreme Court ordered to freeze the salary of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s first woman Commissioner Ashwini Bhide (IAS:1995:MH) for inaction in clearing the encroachments on a plot in Borivali East, the BMC acted swiftly and demolished 27 commercial structures on Wednesday.
The plot had been reserved for a bus station operated by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking.
Just a day before on Tuesday, a Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana had ordered to withhold the salaries of Bhide and that of her personal staff over non-compliance with earlier directions to clear the encroachments on the plot.
The top court’s anger was ignited by the continued delays despite its directions in November 2025 and July 2026. On Tuesday, the apex court took strong exception to the BMC’s inaction and went to the extent of asking if civic officials were acting in collusion with the encroachers.
