Supreme Court Collegium recommends new Chief Justices for four High Courts

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended new Chief Justices for the Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, J&K and Ladakh, and Chhattisgarh High Courts.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of new Chief Justices for the High Courts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, and Chhattisgarh, setting in motion a significant reshuffle in the leadership of four High Courts.

At its meeting held on August 31, 2026, the Collegium recommended the elevation of Justice Sanjay K Agrawal, a Judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court, as Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court. Justice Agrawal was also separately recommended for transfer from the Chhattisgarh High Court to the Rajasthan High Court.

The Collegium has recommended Justice Alpesh Yeshvant Kogje, presently a Judge of the Gujarat High Court, for appointment as Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

Similarly, Justice Dr. Pushpendra Singh Bhati, presently a Judge of the Rajasthan High Court, has been recommended for appointment as Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The High Court has been functioning under Acting Chief Justice Justice Sanjeev Kumar since June 2026.

In another development, the Collegium has recommended Justice Krushna Ram Mohapatra, presently a Judge of the Orissa High Court, for appointment as Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court. The recommendation was made at the Collegium meeting held on August 6, 2026, though the statement was uploaded on the Supreme Court website along with the latest set of resolutions. He has been recommended to succeed Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha, who is due to retire on September 4, 2026.

The recommendations are yet to be formally notified by the Union Government. Once approved, the appointments will bring new permanent Chief Justices to four High Courts.
