Chandigarh: Retired IAS officer Arun Kumar Gupta (IAS:1992:HY), former Principal Secretary to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, has been appointed Chairman of the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission (HERC), ending speculation over his next assignment after retirement from service.
The Haryana Energy Department issued the formal appointment order on Friday (November 6, 2026), under Sections 82 and 89 of the Electricity Act, 2003. According to the order, Gupta will hold the post for five years from the date of taking oath of office or until he attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.
Gupta retired from service on September 30, 2026. Before his retirement, he was serving as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister and was also holding the charge of Finance Secretary. The state government had earlier sought a one-year extension of his service, but the Centre did not approve the proposal.
As reported by LegendOfficers on November 4, Gupta was among the names being discussed for the chairmanship of the Haryana Real Estate Regulatory Authority (HRERA), following the resignation of former IRS officer Preneet S Sachdev. His name was also doing the rounds for the HERC chairmanship, with senior IAS officer Sudhir Rajpal (IAS:1990:HY) being seen as another contender for the HRERA post.
With Gupta now appointed HERC Chairman, attention will turn to the appointment of the next HRERA chief.
