Former IAS officer S Radha Chauhan has been appointed to head the one-member inquiry committee constituted by the Centre on Tuesday to examine alleged irregularities linked to the glitch-hit On-Screen Marking (OSM) system adopted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

The cerntre ordered the probe after alleged discrepancies came to light in the evaluation of Class 12 board examination answer sheets through the OSM system.

The Radha Chauhan committee has been asked to submit its findings to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) within one month.

Following the public outcry, the central government has already replaced CBSE’s Chairman Rahul Singh and Secretary Himanshu Gupta.

The appointment of S Radha Chauhan to head the OSM probe has ignited public interest in knowing, who is she?

In plain words, she is a retired IAS officer belonging to the 1988 batch of the Uttar Pradesh cadre. According to reports, she retired as Secretary, DoPT, in 2025 and currently serves as Chairperson of the Capacity Building Commission (CBC), which works on standardising civil services training and capacity-building initiatives across the country.

Chauhan has also reportedly worked as Joint Secretary in the Department of School Education and Literacy under the HRD Ministry between 2011 and 2015.

She later served as Chairperson and CEO of the National e-Governance Division (NeGD).

Needless to point out, she has held several administrative positions during her long career, including Commissioner of Ghaziabad, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Noida Authority, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Greater Noida, and Additional Commissioner and District Magistrate of Bulandshahr, Pilibhit, Agra, and Meerut.

Chauhan is a law graduate and has worked in sectors including women’s education, health, child development, rural development, urban development, and skill development.

The Centre’s decision to set up a probe committee under her comes after backlash from parents and teachers over the faulty implementation of a new marking (OSM) system designed to assess nearly 10 million answer scripts.
