The Centre has appointed scientist Umesh V Waghmare as Secretary, Department of Science and Technology (DST). According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Wednesday (July 1, 2026), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved Waghmare’s appointment from the date he assumes charge of the post until he attains the age of 60 years, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Prior to his appointment, Waghmare was serving as President and Professor, Theoretical Sciences Unit, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bengaluru.
He will succeed Abhay Karandikar, who was appointed Full-Time Member of NITI Aayog on April 24, 2026. Following Karandikar’s relinquishment of charge on May 15, the ACC had assigned the additional charge of the DST Secretary’s post to Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, until a regular appointment was made.
