The Central government on Monday (June 1, 2026) notified the appointment of four High Court Chief Justices and Senior Advocate V Mohana as Judges of the Supreme Court, taking the top court close to its expanded sanctioned strength.
The development was announced by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal through a post on X.
The appointments come shortly after the Centre increased the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court from 34 to 38 judges. With the latest appointments, 37 positions in the apex court now stand filled.
Those appointed to the Supreme Court include Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court; Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court; Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court; Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh; and Senior Advocate V Mohana.
The recommendation for their elevation was made by the Supreme Court Collegium led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on May 27.
