As Vikas Sahay nears retirement, Gujarat awaits new DGP appointment

DGP Vikas Sahay retires June 30; Gyanender Malik likely successor. Extension still possible, say sources.

Appointment of civic bodies Administrators

Gujarat DGP Vikas Sahay (IPS:1989:GJ) is set to retire on June 30, and attention is now focused on the state government’s next move—whether to extend his tenure or appoint a new police chief.

According to buzz in police and administrative circles, a three-month extension for Sahay is under consideration. However, if the government decides to appoint a successor, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Gyanender Singh Malik (IPS:1993:GJ) is emerging as the strongest contender.

Among the senior-most IPS officers, Shamsher Singh (IPS:1991:GJ) is on central deputation as ADG in BSF, and Manoj Agrawal (IPS:1991:GJ), currently posted as Director, Civil Defence & Commandant General, Home Guards, is due to retire in September, making both less likely choices.

Malik, a seasoned 1993-batch officer, has held important assignments including senior roles in the Border Security Force (BSF). His leadership in securing large-scale events in Ahmedabad, such as the rathyatra, has been widely appreciated.

An official announcement on the next DGP is expected shortly.
