After a wait of four years, Uttar Pradesh is all set to get a full-time Director General of Police (DGP). According to highly placed sources, senior IPS officer Rajeev Krishna (IPS:1991:UP), currently serving as the Acting DGP, has been chosen by the state government for appointment as the next DGP of Uttar Pradesh. An official order is expected shortly.
If appointed, Rajeev Krishna will become the first regular DGP of the state since the removal of Mukul Goel (IPS:1987:UP) in May 2022. He has been holding the charge of Acting DGP since June 1, 2025.
The development comes after the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) finalized a panel of three officers for the top post. The Uttar Pradesh government had earlier forwarded a list of 19 eligible IPS officers to the UPSC, following which a high-level meeting of the Commission was held in New Delhi on May 26.
According to sources, the UPSC shortlisted three officers — Renuka Mishra (IPS:1990:UP), Piyush Anand (IPS:1991:UP) and Rajeev Krishna (IPS:1991:UP) — and forwarded the panel to the state government for final selection.
Renuka Mishra, the senior-most officer in the panel, has been awaiting posting for nearly two years. Piyush Anand is currently serving on central deputation as Director General of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Sources indicated that the state government has decided in favour of Rajeev Krishna, though the formal appointment order is yet to be issued.
As per the Supreme Court’s directions in the Prakash Singh case and UPSC guidelines governing DGP appointments, Rajiv Krishna will be entitled to a minimum fixed tenure of two years once appointed.
Uttar Pradesh has been without a permanent DGP for the last four years. Following Mukul Goel’s removal on May 11, 2022, the state’s police force has been headed by a succession of acting DGPs, including D S Chauhan (IPS:1988:UP), R K Vishwakarma (IPS:1988:UP), Vijay Kumar (IPS:1988:UP), Prashant Kumar (IPS:1990:UP) and Rajeev Krishna.
