IAS Jayesh Ranjan's plan to seek VRS

The Telangana’s bureaucratic and political circles are busy in a lively debate over senior IAS officer Jayesh Ranjan (IAS:1992:TG)’s reported plans to seek voluntary retirement from service (VRS), with media reports suggesting that he may be looking to move into the corporate world after leaving the IAS job.

He is otherwise scheduled to retire on September 30, 2027. Jayesh Ranjan is reported to have conveyed his decision to quit the job to state Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.

What has fuelled speculations is the fact that he has about 11 months of service left and his plans come amid administrative reshuffles and criticism of senior officials by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.

Jayesh Ranjan, currently serving as Special Chief Secretary of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Area, has reportedly confirmed his plans to apply for VRS in the coming months.

Such a decision by one of the senior-most bureaucrats in the state assumes special significance. He was transferred to his current post in December last year, days after the Telangana Rising Global Summit.

With the state govt preparing to organise another Global Summit in December, Ranjan’s VRS plans have fuelled fresh discussions.

Further, Jayesh Ranjan was widely expected to take over as the state’s Chief Secretary in June this year. But the state govt opted for his batchmate Sanjay Jaju for the top bureaucratic position instead.

But what really seems to have provided an immediate reason is the Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s criticism of the functioning of IAS officers. On several occasions, he had expressed displeasure over senior officials allegedly failing to step out of their chambers despite specific instructions.

Interestingly, Jayesh Ranjan’s plans for VRS come almost a year after another senior IAS officer, SAM Rizvi (IAS:1999:TG) posted as Principal Secretary in the Excise Department, had applied for the VRS in October last year.

While Rizvi had cited personal reasons for seeking voluntary retirement, the Excise Minister accused him of misconduct and dereliction of duty.

Jayesh Ranjan’s plan to seek early retirement nearly a year after that controversy have brought to focus the state govt’s handling of senior bureaucrats.
