Ranchi: Jharkhand may soon get a new Director General of Police (DGP), as per emerging indications from government and bureaucratic circles that incumbent DGP Tadasha Mishra (IPS:1994:JH) may be replaced before the Supreme Court takes up the matter related to her appointment on September 7, 2026.
According to sources, the Jharkhand government is considering appointing Tadasha Mishra as the Chairperson of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC). In the event of her appointment to the new position, Prashant Kumar (IPS:1992:JH) or Manvinder Singh Bhatia (IPS:1993:JH) may be considered for appointment as the next DGP of the state.
Kumar is serving as DG, Communication & Technical Services with additional charge of DG, Hqrs, whereas Bhatia is posted as DG, Home Guards & Fire Service.
The development assumes significance in view of the proceedings pending before the Supreme Court regarding the appointment of Tadasha Mishra as Jharkhand DGP.
Notably, the Supreme Court was on Thursday (September 3, 2026) informed by amicus curiae Raju Ramachandran that the Jharkhand government’s decision to appoint Tadasha Mishra as DGP on December 30, 2025, just a day before her retirement, was clearly in violation of the court’s directions requiring an officer appointed as DGP to have at least six months of residual service.
The matter reached the Supreme Court following a plea filed by former Jharkhand Chief Minister Babulal Marandi, who challenged the state government’s amended rules relating to the appointment of the DGP and sought a declaration that the rules were contrary to the directions issued by the apex court.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the matter again on September 7.
Against this backdrop, the possibility of a change in the top police leadership has gained momentum. Sources indicate that the state government may be looking to complete the exercise before the next hearing in the Supreme Court.
