Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government on Thursday revoked the suspension of senior IPS officers Kanthi Rana Tata (IPS:2004:AP) and Vishal Gunni (IPS:2010:AP), who were suspended in connection with the Kadambari Jethwani case, and ordered their immediate reinstatement.
The General Administration Department issued orders, revoking the suspension of the two officers. Their suspension, which was imposed in 2024 under the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, had been extended periodically and was most recently valid till September 4, 2026.
The government said it examined the reports submitted by DGP (HoPF) Harish Gupta (IPS:1992:AP) and the representations made by the two officers before taking the decision.
Kanthi Rana Tata had submitted a representation on August 24 seeking revocation of his suspension. Vishal Gunni had also challenged the continuation of his suspension before the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) and subsequently approached the Andhra Pradesh High Court, alleging that the CAT orders were not being implemented.
Following their representations, the DGP recommended revocation of their suspension. Based on the recommendation, Chief Secretary G Sai Prasad issued orders reinstating both officers with immediate effect.
Background of the case
The matter dates back to February 2024, when YSRCP leader Kukkala Vidyasagar lodged a complaint against actress Kadambari Jethwani and her family, alleging offences including forgery, cheating and extortion.
Vidyasagar alleged that Jethwani had threatened to damage his reputation and file false cases against him unless he paid her large sums of money. Based on his complaint, the Ibrahimpatnam police registered an FIR, following which Jethwani was arrested in Mumbai on February 3, 2024.
However, Jethwani later alleged that she had been illegally detained and that she and her family were harassed by the police. She maintained that the case against her was fabricated and alleged that the police action was used to harass her and pressure her in connection with a separate sexual assault case filed by her in Mumbai.
Following her complaint, cases were registered against several police officials, including then Vijayawada Police Commissioner Kanthi Rana Tata and then Vijayawada DCP Vishal Gunni. The Ibrahimpatnam police registered a case in October 2024 based on her complaint, leading to disciplinary and other proceedings against the officers.
Meanwhile, the CID investigation into the allegations against the police officials is continuing, and a chargesheet in the case arising out of Jethwani’s complaint is yet to be filed.
The government has clarified that the revocation of suspension and reinstatement of the two officers will not affect the disciplinary proceedings or criminal cases pending against them.
