New Delhi: Senior IPS officer Anurag Kumar (IPS:1994:AGMUT) has been appointed new Commissioner of Police, Delhi. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued the order on Friday (July 17, 2026), appointing him to the post for a period of three years. He will succeed Satish Golcha (IPS:1992:AGMUT).
The order said he has been appointed to the post of Delhi Police, with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders.
The MHA has also directed incumbent Satish Golcha (IPS:1992:AGMUT) to report to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi for further posting after Anurag Kumar assumes charge.
A day before the appointment, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Anurag Kumar’s repatriation from the Intelligence Bureau to his parent AGMUT cadre. The repatriation order, issued on Thursday (July 16, 2026), paved the way for his appointment as Delhi Police Commissioner.
A 1994-batch IPS officer, Kumar has spent nearly two decades in the Intelligence Bureau. Before his repatriation, he was serving as Special Director.
During his stint in the Intelligence Bureau, he handled several assignments related to national security, counter-terrorism and intelligence operations. He was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016.
Satish Golcha took charge as Delhi Police Commissioner in August 2025 and was scheduled to remain in office till April 2027. However, he has been replaced about 11 months after taking charge.
Before Golcha’s appointment, SBK Singh (IPS:1988:AGMUT) was holding the additional charge of Delhi Police Commissioner.
