Union Culture Secretary Vivek Aggarwal (IAS:1994:MP) was on Friday appointed as Vice President of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), becoming the first Indian to secure the position in the international body.

The appointment was approved at the conclusion of the FATF plenary meeting held at the organisation’s headquarters in Paris, according to an official statement.

Aggarwal will succeed Giles Thomson of the United Kingdom, who has been serving as FATF Vice President since July 1, 2025.

In a statement issued after the meeting, FATF said members approved the priorities under the incoming United Kingdom Presidency and appointed Vivek Aggarwal of India as incoming Vice President of the FATF for the term from July 2026 to June 2027.

India has been a member of the Financial Action Task Force since 2010.

The FATF is an international body responsible for setting standards and promoting measures to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.
