Gujarat: DGP Vikas Sahay gets 6 months extension

The Gujarat government on Monday (30.06.2025) granted a six-month extension to Director General of Police (DGP) Vikas Sahay (IPS:1989:GJ), allowing him to continue in office till 31 December 2025.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the Ministry of Home Affairs’ proposal to extend Sahay’s tenure beyond his retirement date of June 30, 2025. The extension has been granted as a special case in public interest, under relaxation of Rule 16(1) of the All India Services (DCRB) Rules, 1958.

The last-minute decision caught many in Gujarat’s bureaucratic circles by surprise. Throughout the day, there was intense speculation over whether the government would extend Vikas Sahay’s tenure or appoint a new DGP. Preparations were already underway at Gujarat Police Bhavan for his formal farewell, as he was scheduled to retire today. Initially, reports suggested a three-month extension, but by the second half of the day, it was confirmed that the extension would be for six months. In the late evening, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) issued an official order stating that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) had approved the extension of Sahay’s service for six months.

However, the extension puts on hold any immediate discussions around his successor.

With this decision, Vikas Sahay becomes the third consecutive Gujarat DGP to receive a post-retirement extension. His predecessors—Shivanand Jha and Ashish Bhatia—were also given extended terms.
