THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Senior Indian Police Service officer Shefeen Ahamed K passed away on Monday, 31 August 2026, at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He was 50. The 2003-batch Odisha-cadre officer had been battling cancer and was undergoing treatment.
At the time of his passing, Shefeen Ahamed was serving as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the CID, Crime Branch, and Cyber Crime divisions in Odisha. He is survived by his family, including his father, prominent CITU leader KO Habeeb.
A Career Marked by Excellence
An engineering graduate (B.Tech) from the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram (CET) who also held an MBA, Ahamed joined the IPS on 1 September 2003. Over his 23-year career, he earned a reputation as an exceptionally professional, dynamic, and forward-thinking officer.
He served in several critical capacities across Odisha, including:
- Superintendent of Police (SP) in Jharsuguda
- DIG of the South Western Range (Koraput)
- IGP of the Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC)
He also served a notable inter-cadre deputation tenure in his home state of Kerala, where he worked as the Thiruvananthapuram Rural SP. In 2020, he was awarded the Police Antrik Suraksha Seva Padak for his meritorious service.
Pioneer in Cybercrime Investigation
Ahamed was widely recognized as one of the finest minds in cybercrime monitoring and digital forensics. He was instrumental in upgrading the cybersecurity infrastructure of the Odisha Police and establishing ultra-modern cybercrime operations centers to tackle rising digital threats.
Widespread Condolences Pour In
His sudden demise has triggered a wave of mourning across the political and law enforcement spectrum:
- Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep grief, stating that Ahamed’s dedicated service to the state would always be remembered.
- The Odisha Police department issued a statement honoring his vast contributions to policing, calling his integrity and technical expertise irreplaceable.
- Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor condoled the death, remembering him as a highly competent, thoughtful, and courteous officer who left a lasting impact on both states.
Funeral arrangements and final rites are expected to take place on Tuesday at his native village of Ochira in Kollam.
