SC Collegium approves 9 new HC Judges, makes 2 Additional Judges Permanent; 6 get fresh term

SC Collegium approves nine new High Court judges, makes two Additional Judges permanent and recommends six-month extension for six Calcutta HC judges.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Collegium, in its meeting held on August 18, 2026, approved the appointment of nine persons as Judges of three High Courts and approved the appointment of two Additional Judges as Permanent Judges of the Punjab & Haryana and Calcutta High Courts. The Collegium also recommended a fresh six-month term for six Additional Judges of the Calcutta High Court.

The Collegium approved the appointment of three Judicial Officers as Judges of the Chhattisgarh High Court. They are Santosh Sharma, Sushma Sawant and Sudhir Kumar.

For the Orissa High Court, the Collegium approved the appointment of four Advocates as Judges. They are Sasmita Tripathy, Aditya Narayan Das, Rajjeet Roy and Gautam Misra.

The Collegium also approved the appointment of Nchumbeno Mozhui, Advocate, and Helen Dawngliani, Judicial Officer, as Judges of the Gauhati High Court.

Besides the fresh appointments, the Collegium approved the proposal for appointment of Justice Rohit Kapoor, Additional Judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court, as a Permanent Judge of the High Court.

Similarly, Justice Biswaroop Chowdhury, Additional Judge of the Calcutta High Court, has been approved for appointment as a Permanent Judge of the Calcutta High Court.

The Collegium has further recommended the appointment of the following six Additional Judges of the Calcutta High Court for a fresh term of six months:

  1. Justice Prasenjit Biswas
  2. Justice Uday Kumar
  3. Justice Ajay Kumar Gupta
  4. Justice Supratim Bhattacharya
  5. Justice Partha Sarathi Chatterjee
  6. Justice Md. Shabbar Rashidi
