Ravi Agrawal gets six-month extension as CBDT Chairman

The Centre has extended the contractual tenure of CBDT Chairman Ravi Agrawal by six months. The 1988-batch IRS officer will now continue in the post till December 31, 2026.

The Union government on Tuesday (June 30, 2026) granted a six-month extension to Ravi Agrawal (IRS-IT:1988) as Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), allowing him to continue in the post till December 31, 2026.

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved his reappointment as CBDT Chairman on a contract basis for a period of six months. His fresh tenure will be effective from July 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

The order said the reappointment has been made on the usual terms and conditions applicable to re-employed Central Government officers and in relaxation of the Recruitment Rules.

Agrawal assumed charge as Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the apex policy-making body of the Income Tax Department, on July 1, 2024, after the extended tenure of Nitin Gupta (IRS-IT:1986) came to an end. As he was scheduled to retire on September 30, 2024, his appointment order specifically provided for his reappointment on a contract basis with effect from October 1, 2024, till June 30, 2025.

Subsequently, on June 28, 2025, the Centre extended his contractual tenure by one year till June 30, 2026. With the latest order, his contractual tenure has now been extended by another six months, allowing him to continue as CBDT Chairman till December 31, 2026.
