The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, K Sanjay Murthy, urged the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) probationers to remain positive, committed, and conscious of the important role they would play in India’s journey towards inclusive and sustainable development.

He said this while speaking at the induction training programme of the 79th batch of Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) trainee officers at the National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) on Dec 17.

The batch of probationers comprised 180 officers with an additional 2 officers from the Royal Government of Bhutan. The figure of trainee officers included 67 females, accounting for 37 percent of the total strength.

The CAG said that the Income Tax Department plays a crucial role in the nation-building, as the lion’s share of revenue generated by the central government comes from the department.

He described the NADT as a benchmark for other national training institutions in terms of course content, infrastructure, and training facilities.

Malathi Sridharan, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai and Nagpur, spoke about the new initiatives taken by the Income Tax Department. She pointed out how the department had kept pace with the rising aspirations of the nation through bold reforms aimed at achieving an efficient, effective, and transparent tax administration.

Sridharan marked the transition to a faceless assessment and appellate regime, highlighting a shift from coercive enforcement to voluntary compliance. She said that it is the time to maintain greater reliance on nudging taxpayers rather than compelling them.

She also lauded the pivotal role of NADT’s extensive training in preparing young officers.
