Former Uttar Pradesh DGP Prashant Kumar (Retd.IPS:1990:UP) was on Wednesday (December 17, 2025) appointed as the Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC), Prayagraj, for a tenure of three years. The appointment comes nearly six months after his retirement from active service in May this year.
According to an official statement, the appointment has been made by the Governor of Uttar Pradesh by exercising powers under Section 4 of the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission Act, 2023, as amended by the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025.
A retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Prashant Kumar is regarded as one of the most influential DGPs the state has seen in recent years.
As Chairman of UPESSC, Prashant Kumar will head the Higher and Secondary Education recruitment body, which is responsible for conducting selection and recruitment of teachers for secondary and higher education institutions across Uttar Pradesh.
The appointment reflects the Yogi Adityanath government’s trust in the former police chief’s administrative experience, with expectations that his leadership will strengthen transparency and efficiency in teacher recruitment in the state.
