Justice Surya Kant has been appointed as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) and will assume charge on November 24, 2025. The Department of Justice under the Union Law Ministry issued a notification on Thursday announcing his appointment.

He will succeed Justice Bhushan R. Gavai, who demits office on November 23, 2025. Justice Kant will serve as CJI for nearly 15 months and will retire on February 9, 2027, upon attaining the age of 65 years.

Born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar district of Haryana, Justice Kant comes from a middle-class background. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, after serving with distinction as a judge and Chief Justice in the Punjab & Haryana High Court.

Over his judicial career spanning more than two decades, Justice Kant has delivered several landmark judgments covering critical issues such as the abrogation of Article 370, freedom of speech, democracy, anti-corruption, environmental protection, and gender equality.
