In a significant development, the Maharashtra government on Monday (30.06.2025) appointed the seniormost IAS officer in the state cadre, Rajesh Kumar (IAS:1988:MH), as the next Chief Secretary. He will assume charge later this evening, following the retirement of incumbent CS Sujata Saunik (IAS:1987:MH).

Rajesh Kumar currently serves as Additional Chief Secretary, Revenue Department. His tenure as Chief Secretary will be limited to two months, as he is scheduled to retire on 31 August 2025, unless the government decides to grant him an extension.

Two other senior officers were also in the reckoning for the top post—Iqbal Singh Chahal (IAS:1989:MH), Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, and Bhushan A Gagrani (IAS:1990:MH), Municipal Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.
