Tamil Nadu: Race is on for DGP C Sylendra Babu’s successor, state govt sends a list to UPSC

Lobbying for the top post has multiplied many times. However, the winner must have an excellent career record, a working relationship with the state government, and most importantly, must have met the 30 years of service criteria.

It seems that three names are leading the charge in power circles: Sanjay Arora (IPS:1988:TN), Braj Kishore Ravi (IPS:1989:TN), and Shankar Jaiwal (IPS:1990:TN). At the moment, Sanjay Arora serves as Delhi Police Commissioner, Braj Kishore Ravi is serving as Director General of Civil Defence & Commandant General of the Home Guards, and Shankar Jawal is serving as the DGP/CP for Greater Chennai Police.

According to our sources, the state government has already sent UPSC a list of 12 IPS officers.

They are;

  1. Sanjay Arora (IPS:1988)
  2. Braj Kishore Ravi (IPS:1989)
  3. Shankar Jiwal (IPS:1990)
  4. A K Viswanathan (IPS:1990)
  5. Abhash Kumar (IPS:1990)
  6. T V Ravichandran (IPS:1990)
  7. Seema Agrawal (IPS:1990)
  8. Amaraesh Pujari (IPS:1991)
  9. Rajeev Kumar (IPS:1992)
  10. Sandeep Rai Rathore (IPS:1992)
  11. Abhay Kumar Singh (IPS:1992)
  12. K Vanniaperumal (IPS:1992)

While Pramod Kumar and Rajesh Das, both of the 1989 batch, qualified in terms of years of service, their names were not included because of certain charges. P. Kandaswamy, DGP/Director, Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, also of 1989 batch, would not be eligible since he is nearing retirement, sources said.

A committee consisting of UPSC Chairman, Union Home Secretary, Chief of one of the Central Forces, Chief Secretary of state and DGP will prepare a three-member final panel from this and forward it for appointment. From this, the state government should appoint the police chief.
