Senior diplomat Vinay Mohan Kwatra (Retd.IFS:1988) has been appointed as the new Indian Ambassador to the United States. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the development in a statement after receiving the official letter of acceptance from the host country.
The post has been vacant for the past six months since Taranjit Singh Sandhu (IFS:1988) retired in January,.
Kwatra served as the 34th Foreign Secretary of India, taking over from Harsh Vardhan Shringla (IFS:1984) in May 2022 and serving until July 14, 2024. He was succeeded by Vikram Misri (IFS:1989).
Kwatra is known for his extensive expertise in dealing with India’s neighborhood as well as the US, China, and Europe. He has previously served in China, the US, in PM Modi’s office, and as India’s envoy to France before his tenure as the top bureaucrat in the foreign ministry.
