New Delhi: The Central Government on Wednesday (Augsut 5, 2026) extended the tenure of Cabinet Secretary Dr TV Somanathan (IAS:1987:TN) by one year beyond August 30, 2026.
According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved his extension in service as Cabinet Secretary for a further period of one year beyond August 30, 2026.
Somanathan assumed charge as Cabinet Secretary on August 30, 2024, succeeding Rajiv Gauba (IAS:1982:JH), for a fixed tenure of two years.
With the latest decision, he joins the list of Cabinet Secretaries whose tenures have been extended by the Centre in recent years, continuing the government’s preference for administrative continuity at the country’s highest bureaucratic post.
With this order, the Centre has formally ended speculation over Somanathan’s continuation beyond August 30. LegendOfficers had earlier reported that the government was likely to extend his tenure, citing the recent precedent of granting extensions to Cabinet Secretaries.
