In a significant development, the Tamil Nadu government has reconstituted its Information Commission with former bureaucrat S Natarajan (IAS:2010:TN) being appointed as the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC), along with four Information Commissioners.
An order in this regard was issued by the state govt on Thursday. Besides Natarajan, S Mahalakshmi, Dr T K Shabeer, C B Meena and P Mahalingam have been named as Information Commissioners.
These appointments are significant as the actual strength of the Information Commission dropped to four in August against the sanctioned strength of nine, after M Natesan attained superannuation as information commissioner.
Similarly, the terms of the then Chief Information Commissioner Md Shakeel Akhter, and information commissioners Thirumalaimuthu, P Thamaraikannan and R Priyakumar ended in June.
The state govt had constituted a Search Committee to select eligible candidates for these posts with Atulya Misra being appointed as interim chief commissioner till a full-time chief is appointed.
These newly appointed commissioners will hold office for three years from the date they assume charge or until they attain the age of 65. The appointments and service conditions will be governed by the provisions of the RTI Act and the Right to Information Rules, 2019.
