The rising number of COVID-19 positive cases in India, may stabilise soon, Niti Aayog member V K Paul said on Sunday. Paul justified the third extension of lockdown, saying that it will consolidate the gains of first two phases.

Paul said that the sudden rise in corona cases can still be contained.

Paul, who heads an Empowered Group on medical equipment and management plan to tackle COVID-19 outbreak, said that the lockdown will be carefully opened, in areas where the situation improves.

The Niti Ayog member said that before the lockdown, the cases were doubling every 3 days, but now they are doubling in 11-12 days. He expressed hope that the rate of spread will stabilise soon.

The centre has extended the lockdown by another two weeks after May 3.

However, several experts expressed concern that the lockdown is having an adverse impact on the economy. Many rating agencies and industry bodies also see economic growth rate taking a hit.
