New Delhi: Rina Sonowal Kouli (IInfoS:1994) has been promoted to the Selection Grade (Director General level) of the Indian Information Service (IInfoS) and appointed Director General, Doordarshan, New Delhi.
She was serving as Joint Secretary in the Department of Higher Education on Central deputation.
The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting issued the promotion order on July 29, 2026.
The promotion follows the recommendation of the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) and her empanelment by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
She has been promoted to Level-15 of the Pay Matrix under the Central Civil Services (Revised Pay) Rules, 2016. The promotion will take effect from the date she assumes charge on or after August 1, 2026.
On promotion, Sonowal has been posted as Director General, Doordarshan, New Delhi, on the strength of Press Information Bureau (PIB), Chennai, until further orders.
The DoPT later issued another order on July 31, 2026, approving her premature repatriation from the Department of Higher Education to her parent IIS cadre.
The repatriation was approved to enable her to avail the benefit of promotion in the cadre.
Sonowal had joined the Department of Higher Education as Joint Secretary in January 2023 on a five-year Central deputation. Her tenure was to continue till January 2028.
Her deputation has now been curtailed to facilitate her promotion in the parent cadre and her appointment as Director General, Doordarshan.
