Senior IAS officer Rajesh Kumar Singh (IAS:1989:KL), Secretary, Department of Defence, has been entrusted with the additional charge of Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development and Chairman, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Friday (May 29, 2026), the competent authority has approved the arrangement upon completion of the tenure of Dr Samir V Kamat on May 31, 2026.
The order stated that Rajesh Kumar Singh will hold the additional charge until the appointment of a regular incumbent or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Dr Samir V Kamat has been serving as Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development and Chairman, DRDO since August 2022. Although his scheduled retirement was due on May 31, 2024, he was granted two consecutive one-year extensions. His extended tenure is set to conclude on May 31, 2026.
