The government officials will now be permitted to hold elective office in any body for a period of two terms or five years, whichever is earlier. Earlier, this tenure was limited to four years.

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has now modified rules to this effect. However, if an employee wants to contest an election in such a body, prior sanction of government would have to be taken.
