Meghalaya’s first indigenous tribal woman CS, Rebecca Vanessa Suchiang, passes away at 64

An IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre belonging to the 1989-batch, Suchiang went on to become Meghalaya’s first indigenous tribal woman CS in 2021.

Retired bureaucrat Rebecca Vanessa Suchiang, Meghalaya’s first indigenous tribal woman Chief Secretary, passed away at the age of 64 on Tuesday. She was terminally ill and was undergoing treatment for the last couple of years.

An IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre belonging to the 1989 batch, Suchiang went on to become Meghalaya’s Chief Secretary in 2021 and held the highest bureaucrat post in the state till her superannuation on December 31, 2022.

After retirement she was appointed as Director General of Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute and later as Chief Information Commissioner (CIC). She held the CIC post till her last breath.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed grief over her demise, saying that Rebecca made bold decisions at tough times and was respected for her leadership and inspiring work ethics.

“She had made a great contribution to the state’s administration and public service as the first indigenous woman Chief Secretary. Her service and dedication to the state will be remembered,” the CM said in his condolence message.
