Legendofficers’ exclusive report on the appointment of Uttar Pradesh’s next Director General of Police (DGP) has been proven correct, with the state government officially appointing Rajeev Krishna (IPS:1991:UP) as the state’s new police chief.

On May 30, 2026, Legendofficers had reported, citing highly placed sources, that Rajeev Krishna, who was serving as the Acting DGP, had been chosen by the Uttar Pradesh government for appointment as the state’s next DGP and that an official order was expected shortly. The report also revealed that the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) had forwarded a panel comprising Renuka Mishra (IPS:1990:UP), Piyush Anand (IPS:1991:UP) and Rajeev Krishna to the state government for final selection.

Just a day later, the Uttar Pradesh government issued the formal appointment order, confirming Rajeev Krishna as the state’s Director General of Police and validating the information first reported by Legendofficers.

With the appointment, Krishna becomes the first regular DGP of Uttar Pradesh since the removal of Mukul Goel (IPS:1987:UP) in May 2022. The state had been functioning without a permanent police chief for nearly four years, during which the force was headed by a succession of acting DGPs, including D S Chauhan (IPS:1988:UP), R K Vishwakarma (IPS:1988:UP), Vijay Kumar (IPS:1988:UP), Prashant Kumar (IPS:1990:UP) and Rajeev Krishna himself.

Krishna had taken over as Acting DGP after succeeding Prashant Kumar in May 2025. He will now formally head the country’s largest police force and has nearly three years of service remaining before his retirement in June 2029. He is also serving as Director General of the Vigilance Establishment.

His appointment marks the end of a prolonged period of uncertainty at the top of the Uttar Pradesh Police hierarchy. As reported earlier by Legendofficers, he is expected to enjoy a fixed tenure in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directions in the Prakash Singh case and the UPSC guidelines governing DGP appointments.

A 1991-batch IPS officer, Rajeev Krishna brings more than three decades of policing experience to the top post. During his career, he has served as Superintendent of Police and Senior Superintendent of Police in key districts including Mathura, Etawah, Agra, Noida and Lucknow, besides holding several important leadership assignments in the state police.
