President Droupadi Murmu on Monday (23.12.2024) appointed retired Supreme Court judge V Ramasubramanian as the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). He succeeds Justice (retired) Arun Kumar Mishra completed his tenure on June 1, leaving the post vacant. Since Justice Mishra’s departure, NHRC member Vijaya Bharathi Sayani had been serving as the acting chairperson.
The appointment followed a high-power committee meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 18. Leaders of the Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge (Rajya Sabha) and Rahul Gandhi (Lok Sabha), were also part of the selection process.
