Dr S B Singh gets extension as DGP, Meghalaya

The Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP), Dr SB Singh, who is due to retire on April 30, has been asked by the Ministry of Home Affairs to continue serving as the state’s DGP for another three months in ‘public interest’.

It may be mentioned that extension order came following the inability of the State Security Commission (SCC) to hold a meeting to discuss the appointment of the new DGP. Recently, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that the SSC was yet to hold its sitting as the Commission is yet to have a member from the High Court.

Earlier, prior to the February 27 Assembly elections in the state, the current DGP had already turned down the six month extension period, which is given for retiring DGPs.

It may be mentioned that during the last three years, the state police force under the leadership of three police chiefs — Peter James Haneman, Rajiv Mehta and the current DGP Dr S B Singh ‘successfully’ managed to break the backbone of militancy and contain insurgency in the Garo Hills.

Dr Singh was appointed as the full-fledged DGP of Meghalaya on March 2017. He is 1986 batch IPS officer of AM cadre.
