In an unprecedented move, the Union Government has posted record 16 IPS officers to Manipur in order to contain the situation in a strife-torn state. This is the highest number of IPS officers having been deputed ever in a single year to Manipur. All of them belong to the 2024 batch. The deployment highlights the government’s desperation to restore law and order in the violence-hit region.
Official data shows far fewer postings to Manipur in previous years. 2018 saw 0 officers, 2 officers in 2019, 1 in 2020 and three in 2023.
The move is aimed at strengthening the administrative efficiency as well as improving on-ground policing and intelligence coordination in the state that has been a hotbed of the prolonged unrest in recent months.
