Bihar: Suspended IPS officer Aditya Kumar surrenders in court

Former Senior Superintendent of Police Aditya Kumar (IPS:2011:BH) faced a significant turn of events as he surrendered in a Patna court on Tuesday, leading to his incarceration. The suspension of Kumar arose from accusations of impersonating the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court in a cheating case, and he had been on the run ever since being suspended due to a separate case involving disproportionate assets.

Despite seeking relief through an appeal to the Supreme Court, Aditya Kumar’s request for bail was recently denied, compelling him to surrender within a stipulated two-week period ending on December 6.

Law enforcement in Bihar had been on an extensive search for the absconding IPS officer, and in October 2022, the Economic Offences Unit initiated a case against him, resulting in his suspension from service.

Numerous charges have been brought against Kumar under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. In an earlier incident in 2022, the Economic Offences Unit registered a case involving disproportionate assets totaling ₹1.37 crore against him and four others. The charges included cheating, impersonation, extortion, and other offenses. The FIR alleged that the suspects, including Kumar, had impersonated the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court and pressured the Director General of Bihar Police to close a case against Kumar. In this case, Kumar had been accused of conspiring with the liquor mafia in the dry state of Bihar during his tenure as SSP in Gaya.

The Patna High Court had previously dismissed Kumar’s petition for anticipatory bail, instructing him to surrender within a four-week timeframe.

Khiangte, slated to retire on October 31, 2024, is expected to continue in his new role until his retirement date.
