Modi govt makes ‘good postings’ of income tax officers ‘performance based’

The Narendra Modi govt has conveyd to its income tax officers that they would get good postings only if they complete their targets of tax collections. The government wants to mobilise 2 lakh crore from its ‘Vivaad Se Vishwas’ scheme. As per a 21 February office memo issued by a senior Central Board of Direct Taxes functionary, the field officers’ performance will play a major part in finalisation of their annual performance appraisal reports”.  

Government allows airlines to provide in-flight Wi-Fi service

The Union government on Monday allowed airlines to provide in-flight Wi-Fi services in India. Passengers will be able to access Wi-Fi when their devices are on airplane mode. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India had in 2018 recommended that both Internet, and Mobile Communications on board Aircraft (MCA) service should be permitted as In-Flight Connectivity (IFC) services in Indian airspace. J&K : CBI arrests two IAS officers in arms licence scandal

The CBI has arrested IAS officer Rajiv Ranjan along with a retired bureaucrat Itrit Hussain Rafiqi in connection with the issuance of large number of arms licenses on the basis of forged documents in Jammu and Kashmir.

It is alleged that J&K bureaucrats in cahoots with other accused issued arms licences to non-residents in violation of rules between 2012 and 2016 and received illegal gratification.

The investigation agency last December registered a case on the allegations that during the period 2012 to 2016, the Deputy Commissioners of various districts of J&K including District Kupwara had fraudulently and illegally issued bulk arms licenses in lieu of monetary consideration.

Former Fin. Secy S C Garg appointed advisor to Andhra Pradesh CM

Former Union Finance Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg (Retd.IAS:1983:RJ) has been appointed as advisor to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy for resource mobilisation. Garg has been assigned the rank of a Cabinet Minister and will continue to hold post for a period of two years.

Garg, who was Finance and Economic Affairs Secretary, opted for early retirement from the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in July last year after being abruptly shifted by Modi government from Union Finance Minister to the Ministery of Power.

Ajay Tyagi gets six months extension as SEBI Chief

Ajay Tyagi (IAS:1984:HP) will continue to be the head of India’s capital and commodities markets regulator the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for another six months. The Modi government on Friday extended Ajay Tyagi’s term as chairman SEBI for a period of six months. His three-year term was supposed to end on Saturday.

The government initiated the search for Tyagi’s successor around January-end. It gave only two weeks time till February 11 to file the applications. About a dozen applied for the chairman’s post. Department of economic affairs secretary Atanu Chakraborty, current whole-time member of Sebi Madhabi Puri Buch and corporate affairs secretary Injeti Srinivas were tipped to be the front-runners to replace Tyagi.

The government is learnt to have called only a few applicants for interview last week. However, due to time constraints, it did not find the right candidate for the post, said sources.

The Sebi chairman’s position has always been given to bureaucrats, especially Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officers, except on one occasion when former LIC chairman GN Bajpai became the chairman in 2002.

Odisha : Two IAS officers transferred

  1. Madhusundan Padhi (IAS:1991:OR) : Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Land Records and Settlement.
  2. Pramod Meherda (IAS:1997:OR) : Secretary, Odisha Governor.

Maharashtra : Bipin K Singh gets addl. charge of DG, ACB

Bipin K Singh (IPS:1990:MH), the Additional Director General (ADG) of the ACB, has been given additional charge of the post of Director General of the anti-corruption bureau (ACB).

Param Bir Singh appointed as Mumbai Police Commissioner

Senior IPS officer Param Bir Singh (IPS:1988:MH) has been appointed as the new Police Commissioner of Mumbai. He succeeds Sanjay Barve (IPS:1987:MH), who retired on Saturday.

Singh was posted as Director General (DG) of Anti-Corruption Bureau before his appointment as the Munbai Police Chief.

Singh has also held other important posts including that of Thane police commissioner, of DCP in several important zones in Mumbai, and of Superintendent of Police in districts of Chandrapur and Bhandara.

S N Shrivastava succeeds Amulya Patnaik as Delhi Police Commissioner

Sachidanand Shrivastava (IPS:1985:AGMUT) will succeed Amulya Patnaik (IPS:1985:AGMUT) as Delhi’s Commissioner of Police on March 1. Shrivastava has been given additional charge as Delhi CP. Presently, he is serving as Special Commissioner (Law and Order) in Delhi Police.

SN Shrivastava was transferred from the CRPF to the Delhi Police this week in the wake of communal violence in the national capital. He has worked in the city’s police force in the past.

He had earlier been tipped to take over from Amulya Patnaik, whose extended tenure ends on Saturday (Feb.29,2020).

SN Shrivastava is scheduled to retire in June next year.
