Anand Mahindra reappointed to RBI board; ex-ISRO chief S Somanath also joins

Both these appointments to the central board are considered crucial, as the board oversees the entire affairs and business of the RBI and deliberates on crucial issues.

The Union Government has reappointed business tycoon and Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra on the central board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as a part-time, non-official director. Besides, former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman S Somanathan has also been appointed to the RBI board.

According to the RBI, both these appointments have been made for four years effective August 20, 2026.

Mahindra was first nominated to the RBI board in June 2022, so his reappointment ensures continuity and brings vast experience across manufacturing, rural markets, technology, and financial services to the RBI.

Similarly, Somanath is a renowned aerospace scientist and has served as secretary of the Department of Space, Chairman of the Space Commission, and Chairman of ISRO from January 2022 to January 2025. So, his entry on the RBI board seems to be aimed at broadening the technological expertise of the RBI board as the central bank strengthens its focus on digital payments, resilient financial infrastructure, and emerging technology risks.

Both these appointments are considered crucial, as the central board oversees the entire affairs and business of the RBI and deliberates on matters ranging from regulation and supervision to currency management, financial stability, and the central bank’s accounts.
